Understanding how chiropractic care can help those who suffer from migraines or headaches.
First, let’s understand what migraines and headaches are.
Two of the most common types of headaches are migraines and tension headaches. This happens from muscular contraction in the head region and shoulder. Often migraines are more connected with vascular control in the head while tension headaches tend to not be unilateral with tension on both sides of the head and in most cases, patients can feel the pain coming from their forehead.
Headaches can occur differently in different people; some may experience them a few times a month, once a week, a few times a week, and in severe cases daily. These aches are a sign that the body is functioning abnormally and it’s actually quite common in our population. According to several National Headache Societies, it impacts approximately 40% of the population.
Migraines can manifest with tension in the tops of their heads, a piercing or searing pain in their eye, often unilateral (one side only), some may have visual disturbances. People experiencing migraines can have sensitivity to light and noise, only to receive mild relief by retreating to a completely dark, quiet room.
There is quite a range of how long tension or migraines can last. They can last anywhere from a few hours, on the really short end to sometimes even up to 3-5 days with this particular symptom.
So how do we get migraines?
This condition can be triggered by 3 forms of stress
- Physical stress such as workplace conditions, accidents, or poor sleep
- Biochemical stress which can be poor nutrition, alcohol, smoking
- Mental or emotional stress triggered by life, relationships
How does chiropractic care help?
What chiropractic care does is it brings your body back in balance, so that the body can get back to regulating, healing, and organizing the way it’s innately supposed to. Routine chiropractic care, not only helps minimize symptoms and pains dramatically but ultimately can resolve the problem for good.
In traditional medicine when there is a symptom lot of times they prescribe varying degrees of medications all the way up to antidepressants, and seizure medications. Philosophically, what we know is that when, when somebody has a particular symptom, it’s not because their blood levels of Gabapentin are really low the headache is a symptom that something is wrong. What we do as chiropractors is to start by delivering a very gentle non-invasive non-addictive treatment called a chiropractic adjustment.
This treatment is designed to bring the body back in balance by making sure the central nervous system is functioning properly. Most people after the first adjustment are surprised at how easy and how noninvasive and how comfortable an adjustment can be. As a result of getting adjusted, the body is more capable of adapting and healing, and getting back to normal.
Giving the nervous system the help that it needs to function better and the byproduct is that headaches reduce or even go away.
